SBM Offshore has signed a major contract with Woodside Energy for the construction and lease of a floating storage and offloading(FSO) unit to be used in the development of the Trion oil field and project, located in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
The Trion oil project
This contract, which extends over a 20-year period, is a supplement to a previous agreement for the transportation and installation of the FSO and floating production unit(FPU), awarded to SBM Offshore in 2023.
The new FSO will be based on a Suezmax-type hull design and will feature a state-of-the-art disconnectable turret mooring(DTM) system designed by SBM Offshore. This unit will be installed at a water depth of approximately 2,500 meters, with the capacity to store up to 950,000 barrels of crude oil. The Trion field, operated by Woodside with a 60% participation, in collaboration with PEMEX Exploración y Producción (40%), is located 180 km off the Mexican coast, near the maritime border with the United States.
The Trion project project is vital to Woodside and SBM Offshore because it represents the expansion of offshore energy operations in the region. SBM Offshore’s ability to design, build and operate this critical infrastructure reinforces its position as a leader in the offshore energy industry, contributing to the safe and sustainable production of offshore oil and gas.
This contract underscores SBM Offshore’ s commitment to responsible energy transition, using its expertise to reduce emissions from fossil fuel production and promote cleaner solutions in the industry.
