ASTM International is developing a new robotic standard for solar panel cleaning . The proposal, known as WK91653, will evaluate robotic systems used to maintain the efficiency of these panels, addressing safety, asset care and water conservation needs in this emerging sector.

New standards for solar cleaning

Carla Dawson, a member of ASTM International, points out that solar panel cleaning solar panel cleaning is relatively new, with the longest-lived manufacturers of the technology barely exceeding 15 years in existence. Given the rapid growth of the market, it has become imperative to establish clear standards that ensure not only the protection of assetsbut also the safety of operators and bystanders.

In addition to the direct benefits for solar panel managers and manufacturers, the standard is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically those related to access to clean water and affordable energy.specifically those related to access to clean water and affordable energy. This link underscores the importance of developing technologies that are not only efficient, but also sustainable and environmentally responsible.

Robotic standard boosts solar efficiency

The standard WK91653 is designed to create a safer and more durable environment, while minimizing water use and maximizing energy efficiency. According to Dawson, “one of the key objectives is to improve clean energy efficiency, reducing water consumption levels and improving the health and safety of all involved.”

The ASTM committee invites interested parties to participate in the development of this standard, with particular interest in involving solar panel cleaning equipment manufacturers and EHS experts within the solar industry. This collaborative effort is essential to ensure that the standard reflects best practices and evolving market needs.
