Columbia University has presented the Emo robot, which has caused a sensation for what it is capable of doing, as it has perfected the ability to replicate human facial expressions, reaching such a speed that it predicts more fluid and natural interactions between people and machines.

The team at the university’s Creative Machines Lab has enhanced the Emo robot with the ability to predict facial expressions, allowing it to not only copy gestures such as smiles, but also to predict them. By detecting slight muscle movements prior to a smile, Emo is able to react simultaneously, differing significantly from the typical slow responses seen in previous robots.

Emo benefits from advanced technology that integrates a series of small motors and state-of-the-art cameras in its eyes. This sophisticated design allows it to interpret human emotions and provide responses that appear genuine, promoting true interaction.

Currently, Emo’s expressive capabilities are limited to 26 specific facial points, but research is underway to expand its abilities. The team’s goal is to add advanced verbal communication skills to it in order to replicate the success of language models used in other humanoid robots .
