The United States saw 10 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale solar capacity contracts in the second quarter, up 201% from the first quarter for the highest quarterly growth on record, according to new analysis from Wood Mackenzie.

This activity represented the largest quarterly contracted capacity since 2019 and brought the contracted portfolio to 88 GW, an all-time high.

Although contracts remain high, the effects of the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are not likely to take full effect until 2025, when project schedules catch up and supply chain problems have ceased.

Wood Mackenzie projects that the US utility-scale PV market will add 437 GW between 2022 and 2032.

The United States saw 2.7 GW of commercial-scale solar installations in the second quarter, up 24% from the previous quarter. More than half of the activity (53%) was driven by Texas. The Southeast was also active, with Florida and Georgia also posting strong gains, up 12% and 11%, respectively.
