Radiant Industries makes technological breakthrough with second phase of testing of the Kaleidos microreactor. This breakthrough follows successful completion of the front-end engineering and experimental design ( FEEED ) phase with support from the U.S. Department of Energy ( DOE ) and Idaho National Laboratory ( INL ).

The Detailed Design and Experimental Planning ( DEP ) phase will lead Radiant to complete the design of the 1 MW reactor and secure the essential elements for future successful deployment. This phase includes the creation of safety documentation, including the Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis ( PDSA ), which is critical for commercial licensing and future testing of the Kaleidos microreactor. This is followed by the delivery of the Conceptual Safety Design Report ( CSDR ), which certifies Radiant’s ability to meet DOE safety standards.

Radiant’s progress into the DEEP phase is an example of the success of public-private collaboration in nuclear innovation. INL and DOE are instrumental in supporting companies like Radiant that are developing clean, scalable energy solutions. In fact, the construction of the DOME test facility at INL, where the reactor will be tested, is a testament to the commitment of both parties to promoting safe nuclear energy.

Radiant’s Kaleidos microreactor technology represents a breakthrough in the creation of portable, efficient modular reactors that have the potential to transform the way we generate and distribute clean energy. Radiant is positioned to lead the way in developing advanced reactors that can operate in a variety of locations, from industrial facilities to remote areas in need of reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

In the DEEP phase, Radiant will finalize its design and begin acquiring key reactor systems for future deployment in the INL DOME test bed . As the project progresses, the company continues to develop technology solutions and prepares the infrastructure for future testing that will provide vital information on the performance and safety of the microreactor in a real-world environment.

Radiant COO Tori Shivanandan said: “This award reflects our dedication to bringing clean and safe nuclear energy solutions to market. We are getting closer to proving that an advanced nuclear energy future is possible and essential to addressing the energy challenges of the 21st century.
