The Brazilian oil company Petrobras has presented a digital tool called“GIS CCUS Brazil“, designed to centralize all public information on carbon capture and storage(CCUS) in Brazil.
The CCUS Brazil GIS platform
This platform, accessible free of charge and online, aims to facilitate the implementation of projects that promote decarbonization in the country, in line with global efforts to mitigate climate change.
This tool has been developed in collaboration with the Institute of Petroleum and Natural Resources(IPR) of the PUCRS. PUCRS and with technical support from Petrobras experts, the CCUS GIS platform brings together geo-referenced data including the location of more than 1,500 CO₂ sources, infrastructure and logistics elements, and analysis of geological storage potential in Brazilian sedimentary basins.
It also has vital information on storage capacity in salt reservoirs and depleted hydrocarbon fields, making it a valuable resource for planning future projects.
Petrobras’ Engineering, Technology and Innovation director, Renata Baruzzi, mentioned the importance of this platform to encourage partnerships and promote regulations and standards in the decarbonization sector. In addition, the platform is competing for the ANP Innovation 2024 award, underscoring its relevance in the industry.
The CCUS Platform uses public information from programs such as Revitalization of Oil and Natural Gas Exploitation and Production in Onshore Areas(REATE), Revitalization and Incentive for Offshore Production(PROMAR) and data from sources such as the IPCC, independent UN organizations, the GHG Protocol, and other environmental sectors.
In addition to the platform, the publication of a CCUS atlas is planned, which will contain detailed technical-scientific information on potential reservoirs for the CO₂ storage in Brazil.with a launch planned for early next year.
