Petrobras and Ecopetrol have made history with the announcement of the largest gas discovery in Colombia. The Sirius-2 well, located in the GUA-OFF-0 offshore block 77 kilometers from Santa Marta, has revealed gas volumes that could double Colombia’s current reserves.

The Sirius-2 well was drilled at a depth of 830 meters underwater and spudding began on June 19, 2024. The initial evaluation has confirmed volumes exceeding 6 trillion cubic feet of gas in place ( VGIP ), which translates to a 200% increase in the country’s proven reserves. This discovery is historic for the Colombian energy industry.
The consortium operating in this project is formed by Petrobras Internacional Braspetro BV – Sucursal Colombia ( PIB-COL ) and Ecopetrol , with stakes of 44.44% and 55.56%, respectively.
The two companies will invest more than $4.1 billion in the exploration and production development phases . In addition, the consortium plans to install subsea gas pipelines and production systems, with the aim of starting commercial gas production in 2027.
Activities will be carried out in strict compliance with environmental and safety regulations, ensuring that the benefits of this project are sustainable and responsible. Ecopetrol also continues to demonstrate its leadership in the country’s energy industry and its ability to drive economic growth through energy projects.
