The Minister of Economy and Finance , Alex Contreras, pointed out that Peru’s economic activity will record a significant recovery in the third and fourth quarters of this year.
āThere are elements that make us think, despite the circumstances, that we are entering a good moment and we are entering a recovery phase. The ‘Con Punche PerĆŗ’ program has been key in the reactivation, for example, of public investment, which so far this year has been growing by more than 15%,ā he said on TV PerĆŗ.
āThis is something important because usually when there were changes in authorities, what happened was that public investment plummeted. We are being very optimistic, and we foresee a significant recovery of the Peruvian economy in the third and fourth quartersā, he added.
Alex Contreras explained that the recovery can be seen in the indicators for May, which are better than those for April and March.
āWhen activity begins to recover, this is reflected in greater consumption and investment, which directly impacts the well-being of the citizen. What our indicators for May show us is that the economy, after falling in January, is recovering,ā he said.
The minister recalled that at the beginning of this year there were complicated months due to coastal El NiƱo, Yaku and social conflict, in addition to the fact that the Government is preparing for the risk of global El NiƱo.
āWe are making progress on different fronts and there are concrete results to show the population. Our great concern and priority is that in the second part of this year we can see a significant rebound, not only in production, especially in employment,” he said.
āIt is true, some issues take time to show up, macroeconomic variables do not respond so quickly, especially in such complex contexts, but in reality our forward projections are very positive and we are making progress in that. With Punche, Peru has several axes that will help to reactivate, create employment and serve sectors with great urgencyā, he added.

Positive projections anticipate a recovery of the economy in Peru for the second semester
In another interview with RPP, Minister Contreras reiterated that the MEF maintains its growth projection for the Peruvian economy at 2.5% for this year, but that the review will be done next August.
āIt is a recovery that is taking place. It is true that January was very hard with a fall of 1.1%, then a decline of 0.5% in February, already in March we have begun to have positive results of 0.2%, but what we are observing is that this recovery will continue and at the end of the This year we expect to close at levels close to 4%ā, indicated the minister.
