Last Saturday, the company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) experienced a decrease in oil production equivalent to approximately a quarter of its total daily production, as a result of a massive explosion on one of its platforms the previous day, which left two people killed and other injured .

Pemex exploration and production chief Angel Cid said the explosion “substantially affected” production.

According to an informed source, about 450,000 barrels of oil and more than 560 million cubic feet of gas were lost, representing approximately 11% of Pemex’s total natural gas production when production was shut down as a contingency measure at the Ku Maloob Zaap producing asset.

Almost 450,000 barrels of oil lost

Although this loss is significant, it is likely to be temporary as Pemex has resumed some of its operations following the deadly fire. So far, there has been no official comment from a company representative.

In the early hours of Friday, Pemex reported an explosion at the gas processing center of the Nohoch Alfa platform in the Cantarell field , resulting in the death of two people, one missing, and others injured.

Octavio Romero, executive president of Pemex, reported that the platform’s connection module was destroyed, but thanks to extinguishing efforts, the fire was prevented from spreading to other modules.

Angel Cid also mentioned that the explosion has had a significant impact on the production of the platform.

Pemex has come under fire from analysts due to its record in terms of the environment and safety, having experienced frequent accidents and explosions at its facilities. The company also faces $107.4 billion in debt , the highest among major oil companies, and is dealing with a liquidity crisis.
