The Ever Max ship made its inaugural transit through the Panama Canal. This container ship, operated by the Evergreen shipping company and built in 2023 under the Singapore flag, has a maximum capacity of 17,312 TEU. Despite the restrictions due to drought and draft adjustments that have been implemented, the Panama Canal has the capacity to receive this type of container ship.

The Ever Max is a large vessel, with a length of 366 meters and a width of 51 meters. Its draft is greater than 50 feet or 15.24 meters, which is the maximum allowed under normal weather conditions in the Panama Canal when Gatun Lake is at maximum capacity.

The Ever Max ship and the canal restrictions

Due to current weather conditions and draft adjustments, the container ship Ever Max had to unload 1,400 TEU at the Port of Balboa for transportation by land and pickup at the Colon Container Terminal. During transit through the Panama Canal, the vessel operated with a draft of 43 feet and transported a total of 13,345 TEU. This draft adjustment resulted in a loss of over $40,000 in tolls for the Panama Canal this time around.

Due to the extended dry season and weather projections, the Panama Canal will maintain a maximum available draft of 44 feet or 13.41 meters for the next few months. Following this temporary condition, an average of 32 vessels will be allowed in transit per day , thus ensuring a reliable and sustainable service as long as weather conditions do not vary significantly.

“When this historic transit is completed, the efficiency and solidity of the interoceanic highway is evident as a fundamental maritime transport route for global trade, despite the challenges imposed by climate change,” said the deputy administrator of the Panama Canal . , Ilya Espino de Marotta.

For his part, administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales stressed that “this unique experience should be used to demonstrate the importance of keeping the Canal in optimal conditions, allowing ships like the Ever Max to transit quickly and expeditiously, benefiting everyone in Panama.”

The Ever Max is part of a service that provides a connection between Asia and the East Coast of the United States. This service runs weekly and makes calls in Asian ports such as Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Yantian (Shenzhen) and in North American ports such as Savannah, Newark, Norfolk and Baltimore. In Panama, the vessel carries out transshipment operations at the Colon Container Terminal.
