Sunstone Solar, the largest solar project in the United States, has received final approval from the Oregon Energy Facilities Siting Council (EFSC), marking a milestone in solar and storage development in the country. With a capacity of 1,200 MW in both solar generation and storage, this project is shaping up to be one of the largest in the country, surpassing any other similar initiative.
America’s largest solar project boosts local economy
The project, developed by Pine Gate Renewables, represents a step forward in the transition to renewable energy and also in the commitment to local communities. The company, with more than 100 operational facilities nationwide, has been a pioneer in the integration of large-scale energy storage , which allows for improved stability of the electrical grid.
A key aspect of Sunstone Solar is its focus on the local economy. Pine Gate has established an innovative program that prioritizes the agricultural needs of Morrow County, Oregon. This fund will help offset the economic impact of the project on wheat farms, contributing more than $1,000 per acre of the project toward agricultural resilience initiatives.
Impact on the energy industry
Once the engineering and procurement process is complete, construction on the project is expected to begin in 2026 , representing a quantum leap in solar power generation capacity in the region. Additionally, the project will enable connection to the Bonneville Power Administration, ensuring that the energy generated benefits multiple utility companies.
Ben Catt, CEO of Pine Gate Renewables, stressed that this type of collaboration with local authorities is essential to ensure the success of such complex projects. Senator Ron Wyden also highlighted the importance of Sunstone Solar as a model for federal investment in the fight against the climate crisis.
