ORE Catapult advances new offshore wind test facility in UK

ORE Catapult and RENK Test System strengthen UK offshore wind infrastructure.

The Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult continues its development of offshore wind energy technologies with a major agreement signed with RENK Test System GmbH. This contract is for the installation of a state-of-the-art transmission system testbed at the National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth, Northumberland.

Wind power testbed and capacity expansion

The testbed will significantly enhance the current capabilities of the ORE Catapult, increasing its capacity from 15 MW to 23 MW , with the potential to expand to 28 MW in the future. This advancement will strengthen the UK’s clean energy infrastructure and position the country as a leader in the development of next-generation wind turbines .

ORE Catapult’s Director of Technology Development, Tony Quinn, highlighted the importance of this project for the future of wind technology in the country, saying that this upgrade is a fundamental step towards greater reliability and efficiency in wind turbines.

The role of RENK Test System GmbH

RENK Test System will bring its vast experience in the design and manufacture of customised test systems, ensuring that this new test rig will be a world-class benchmark . RENK CEO Mathias Karrer expressed his pride in being part of this project and underlined the importance of this test rig for the development of larger and more powerful turbines .

This project is aligned with the UK’s 2030 goals to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, making this initiative a key part of the country’s energy future.
