OMV and Airbus have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This agreement seeks to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon aviation sector, aligned with the goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
Sustainable aviation fuel as a key solution
SAF, made from renewable feedstocks such as recycled oils, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fuels. OMV has taken a leading role in the production of SAF from its refinery in Schwechat, Austria, where it already supplies airlines at Vienna Airport.
This partnership aims to expand access to SAF and stimulate global demand through investments in production infrastructure. Airbus , committed to leading innovation in the aeronautical industry, sees this collaboration as a decisive step towards the large-scale development of renewable fuels.
Next steps
Both companies will explore new raw materials and production technologies to accelerate the availability of SAF. Martijn van Koten, Executive Vice President of OMV, said:
Transformative partnerships are essential to building a sustainable future, and this agreement underlines our commitment to innovation and excellence.
Since 2022, OMV has produced SAF as part of its 2030 Strategy, while Airbus continues to promote regulations and policies that facilitate the adoption of renewable fuels in aviation. Together, both companies are positioned as leaders on the path towards a cleaner and more responsible aeronautical industry.
