On March 3, 2025, authorities and environmentalists confirmed an oil spill in the Campeche Sound , near the Cantarell complex. Satellite images identified a spill extending more than 10 kilometers, severely impacting marine fauna and the waters near the Akal-C Processing Center platform, located approximately 86 km from Ciudad del Carmen.

This incident has sparked widespread alarm among fishermen and activists, who are demanding answers from Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) and environmental authorities.

The oil spill in the Campeche Sound is causing concern.

The event was confirmed by Alexandro Brown Gantús, deputy prosecutor for crimes against animals, the environment, and ecosystems in Campeche.

Environmentalists and organizations like PROFAUNA have warned about the dangers of the spill for various marine species. Birds and fish could be seriously affected, increasing the risk of ecological imbalances in the area. Furthermore, there is a possibility that the contaminant could reach the coast, which would amplify the damage.

Local fishermen and environmental groups, for their part, have demanded that PEMEX immediately comment on the cause of the spill and the measures it will take to contain it. The lack of an official statement so far has increased distrust toward the state-owned company.

This is not the first incident of its kind. Activists have pointed out that spills in the Campeche Sound have occurred for the past 40 years without any effective solutions being implemented to prevent the recurrence of these ecological disasters. Environmental authorities, including the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), have launched investigations to determine the source of the spill.

PEMEX and authorities are expected to provide more information about the incident and the actions that will be taken to mitigate the spill’s effects in the coming days.
