TotalEnergies boosts offshore wind power in North Sea

The turbine will be able to withstand harsh sea conditions, including waves of more than 10 meters high.

TotalEnergies has launched a pilot marine energy project where a offshore wind turbine will power the Culzean platform in the UK North Sea. This initiative is part of the company’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its offshore operations.

The 3 MW offshore wind turbine, located 2 km west of the Culzean platform, is one of the first of its kind in the region. It is expected to be operational by the end of 2025, supplying up to 20% of the offshore facility’s energy demand, which will contribute significantly to the reduction of its carbon footprint.

Floating wind turbine will be key for offshore energy

Designed by Ocergy, the semi-submersible floating structure will be key to optimizing installation costs and ensuring rapid start-up. This project will also serve as a test-bed for future deployments of offshore offshore wind energy combining renewable electricity generation with existing gas turbine generation.

Marie-Noelle Semeria, chief technology officer of TotalEnergiessaid that this project represents a major breakthrough in the integration of clean energy in oil and gas operations. oil and gas in line with global sustainability goals.

The project was selected in Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round, which supports the use of offshore wind power to directly supply offshore offshore platforms reaffirming the UK’s commitment to the energy transition.
