Ocean Winds’ EFGL project selects Port-La Nouvelle as maintenance base

This project advances towards the consolidation of floating wind energy in France, setting a precedent in the development of renewable energies and in the European energy transition.
El importante acuerdo estratégico del proyecto EFGL

The Les éoliennes flottantes du golfe du Lion ( EFGL ) project has selected Port-La Nouvelle as its maintenance base, in a decision announced in the presence of authorities from the Occitanie Region and the Port-La Nouvelle mairie.

The strategic agreement of the EFGL project

The contract has been signed between Euroports , operator of the Marine Renewable Energies ( EMR ) terminal in Port-La Nouvelle, and the representatives of the EFGL project, supported by Ocean Winds ( OW ) and Banque des Territoires . With this partnership, the terminal managed by Euroports will serve as a logistics point for the construction of the wind farm, and will host the project’s maintenance base and offer associated services over the next 20 years.

The EFGL project was selected by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency ( ADEME ) as part of the Programme d’investissements d’avenir . Its objective is the installation and operation of three 10 MW floating wind turbines, located more than 16 km off the coast of Leucate and Le Barcarès. This innovative wind farm will harness the strong winds in the area to generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 50,000 people, a figure similar to the population of Narbonne.

The installation of the maintenance base will begin in the fall of 2025 and is expected to generate at least 15 permanent jobs during the two decades of operation of the park. In addition to its impact on the generation of clean energy, the project strengthens the commitment of Ocean Winds and Banque des Territoires to the development of floating wind technology.

This port, which is undergoing rapid expansion, is positioning itself as a benchmark centre for renewable energy in the Mediterranean. The presence of a maintenance base such as EFGL’s reaffirms its role in the development of the floating wind sector and in promoting local employment.

We are very pleased to continue the collaboration with Euroports initiated in June 2022 with the contract relating to project logistics at the Port of Port-La-Nouvelle. In addition to being the logistics hub for the construction phase of the Project, Port-La-Nouvelle will now be the anchoring point for all EFGL maintenance teams. We are proud to contribute to making Port-La-Nouvelle the port of the energy transition and floating wind energy in Occitania.

Jérémy de Barbarin, director of the project Les éoliennes flottantes du golfe du Lion.

Hosting the EFGL project Maintenance Base in the immediate vicinity of our terminal dedicated to supporting the floating wind sector is a great satisfaction: testimony to a successful collaboration between EFGL, OCEAN WINDS and Euroports, it is also, for our company, an illustration of its ability to meet the needs of its customers by offering fully integrated, complementary and flexible logistics solutions.

Olivier Ruth, general director of Euroports France.
