Thecla Bodewes Shipyards has achieved a new breakthrough in shipbuilding with the successful christening and launching of IANA , a 5,050 DWT multipurpose dry cargo vessel, set to transform the shipping industry . Marking the start of the SALMO series, IANA has been designed and built entirely at its facility in the Netherlands, following a philosophy focused on innovation and sustainability.
IANA ship with diesel-electric technology for the future
The IANA stands out for its diesel-electric propulsion system , one of the most advanced options in the field of modern navigation. Equipped with three diesel generators of 532 kW each and two 600 kW electric motors, the vessel achieves exceptional efficiency in terms of fuel consumption . This solution contributes to reducing carbon emissions and offers a significant reduction in OPEX (operating costs), making it an ideal choice for fleets committed to sustainability.
The SALMO series, of which IANA is the first vessel, is designed to offer deadweight capacities between 5,050 and 6,500 DWT , and is presented as one of Thecla Bodewes Shipyards’ most advanced offerings. In addition, special attention has been paid to the hull design to maximise fuel efficiency, ensuring a future-proof vessel capable of adapting to alternative fuels such as methanol or hydrogen in the future.
An exemplary collaboration for efficient transport
Transtal Shipping, a leading company in short sea shipping solutions , is proud to welcome this new vessel to its fleet. The Netherlands-based shipping company operates primarily in the Mediterranean Sea and other European waterways, and has relied on Thecla Bodewes Shipyards to shape a vessel that meets the demands of today and is ready for the challenges of tomorrow.
This vessel is a clear example of our vision for responsible and efficient shipping. We are excited to be part of this collaboration that will mark the beginning of a new era for shipping, one that puts sustainability and innovation at the forefront.
Commented Yusuf Capoglu, Director of Transtal Shipping.
With a draft of 6.30 metres and a capacity of 208,360 cubic feet , the IANA is a perfect example of what the shipping industry needs to move towards a greener and more efficient future. This new generation of ships is technologically smart and reflects Thecla Bodewes Shipyards’ commitment to emission-free navigation and innovative propulsion solutions that reduce the carbon footprint.
