A team including Helge Eggers and Ulrich W. Paetzold, among other researchers at the Institute for Microstructure Technology, attached to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany, has developed and tested perovskite solar cell modules that look like marble tiles. and that can be used as a construction material to cover the desired areas of building facades.

Perovskite-type solar cells, so named for certain key similarities to the mineral of that name, have already achieved efficiencies of more than 25 percent in the laboratory.

Compared to similarly efficient silicon solar cells, the materials used in perovskite solar cells are cheaper and the production methods are simpler.

Eggers and colleagues, in collaboration with industry partner SUNOVATION, have successfully demonstrated a new inkjet printing method for coloring perovskite solar modules. Its main advantage is that it is suitable for large areas.

This new method allows you to apply a wide range of colors and create complex color patterns. The researchers produced solar modules that look like various building materials, including white marble.

Eggers’ team reports the technical details of their breakthrough in the academic journal Solar RRL, titled “Perovskite Solar Cells with Vivid, Angle-Invariant, and Customizable Inkjet-Printed Colorization for Building-Integrated Photovoltaics.”
