North Star, the vessel operating company specializing in marine infrastructure support services, has taken the lead in implementing Chartwell and VARD’s Midi-SOV, a new offshore wind boat design. This innovative vessel is the result of a collaboration between Chartwell Marine and VARD, renowned for their expertise in ship design and construction.
North Star leads with Chartwell and VARD’s Midi-SOV in Europe
The Midi-SOV, a 55-meter offshore wind vessel, is intended to operate in the European, Asian and U.S. markets. North Star has signed a strategic agreement with Chartwell and VARD, committing to be the first operator to use the Midi-SOV in offshore wind energy projects. This initiative includes investment in upfront design fees to facilitate the construction of vessels for operations in Europe.
The Midi-SOV solution addresses key issues in the offshore wind industry by positioning itself between crew transfer vessels (CTVs) and service operating vessels (SOVs). by positioning itself between crew transfer vessels (CTVs) and service operating vessels (SOVs). It offers a cost-effective alternative to large-scale SOVs, improving convenience and operational viability. The Midi-SOV design has been optimized with operational data to meet the specific needs of offshore wind developers and operators, complementing existing fleets.
Collaborative event and feedback
On June 12, Chartwell, VARD, and North Star hosted a collaborative working group at the Royal Southern Yacht Club during the Seawork boat show. More than 50 offshore wind developers, turbine manufacturers and supply chain representatives attended. The “Art Gallery” format event showcased drawings and renderings of the Midi-SOV, allowing attendees to review and provide feedback on the design.
Outstanding benefits of Midi-SOV
The Midi-SOV promises to improve the economics of wind energy projects through increased performance and scalability. Its design allows continuous year-round access, even in adverse weather conditions, providing an additional 13 hours of daily access compared to some CTV models during the winter months.
Midi-SOV’s operational efficiency is reflected in lower technician attrition rates, thanks to its comfortable and spacious working environments. In addition, its robust safety performance was highlighted, reducing risks during technician transfers and crane operations.
Statements by project leaders
Andy Page, managing director of Chartwell Marine, said, “The Midi-SOV was designed with a clear vision to integrate into future offshore wind fleets, bridging the gap between CTVs and SOVs and addressing key operational challenges. The positive response from offshore wind operators underscores the industry’s readiness for new solutions to improve project efficiency, safety and costs. We are delighted to continue our collaboration with North Star, a leader in taking this boat from design to reality.”.
Andrew Duncan, North Star’s director of renewables and innovations, added: “North Star has been researching this sector for years and initiated this collaborative project with Chartwell and VARD . Our assessment shows that the Midi-SOV will play a key role in the European offshore wind fleet, especially in the North Sea and the Baltic States. We are excited about the operational versatility of the design, as well as the high standards of safety and cost-effectiveness it offers, and are proud to lead the launch of the first Midi-SOV to the market.”.
