Norsk e-Fuel has announced a partnership with Prime Capital and RES to develop a sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF ) plant in the municipality of Ånge, north of Stockholm, Sweden. The Alby project aims to produce up to 80,000 tonnes of SAF per year, using renewable energy-based production processes and Power-to-Liquid ( PtL ) technology.
What is Project Alby?
The Alby project is an industrial-scale e-fuel plant that will transform green hydrogen into e-kerosene , a synthetic and sustainable fuel for aviation. This plant will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions from the aviation sector, and will improve the relationship with energy in Sweden, a country committed to sustainability and the use of renewable sources.
This project is a milestone for Norsk e-Fuel as we expand into Sweden and continue to lead the way in supplying fossil-free fuels for the aviation industry.
Karl Hauptmeier, CEO of Norsk e-Fuel.
This effort is in line with the European Union ’s goals to reduce CO₂ emissions from the aviation sector, and the plant will be developed in compliance with ReFuelEU Aviation regulations, which promote the use of sustainable alternative fuels in European aviation.
Sustainable aviation fuel production
The Ånge plant site covers 14 hectares of land, providing ideal conditions for large-scale e-fuel production while offering access to renewable energy. The Ånge region is set to become an essential hub for green hydrogen production in Europe, optimising industrial synergies for future projects.
In addition to its production capacity, the project is designed to be a catalyst for change in the aviation industry . Matilda Afzelius, CEO of RES in the Nordic countries, highlights that the impact of this project could improve the aviation landscape in Europe, while reducing the carbon footprint of one of the most polluting industries.
By expanding its operations in the Nordic countries, the company is committed to the global green transition, supplying synthetic fuels that could play an important role in mitigating climate change, by incorporating innovations such as the Power-to-Liquid process and strategic alliances with leading companies.
