The Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant, located in the state of New York, USA, is about to start using a fraction of its electricity production to manufacture hydrogen, a fuel that has multiple uses in the vehicle, aviation and heating areas.
According to statements by Joe Dominguez, CEO of Constellation Energy Group, owner of the plant and the largest nuclear operator in the country, for now it is a demonstration project, but hydrogen is expected to play an important role in the future of the company.
“Over time, some of Constellation’s 23 nuclear power plants could dedicate up to half of their generation capacity to hydrogen production,” Dominguez said.
In the short term, Nine Mile Point will be carrying out two hydrogen projects and according to Alice Caponiti, deputy assistant secretary of the US Department of Energy, Nine Mile Point will be the first nuclear power plant in the country to manufacture hydrogen.
Dominguez said he expects Constellation to start selling hydrogen in 2026, adding that given the Nine Mile Point plant’s position on the Great Lakes, it’s possible the nuclear power plant could one day produce compressed hydrogen and ship it overseas.
