Newmont Corporation ‘s Cadia mining operation, located in Orange, New South Wales, Australia, has been awarded The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark certifications, consolidating its position as a benchmark in the country’s mining industry.
The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark certification
The Cadia mine becomes Newmont’s first project to receive this dual certification, a validation of its commitment to sustainability and responsible production. In addition, the mine is Australia’s second largest copper producer , and the only mine in the country that produces molybdenum, a mineral essential to Australian industry.
This achievement underpins Newmont’s commitment to rigorous standards in sustainability, human rights and governance. Suzy Retallack, the company’s chief safety and sustainability officer, said: “ Meeting the growing demand for copper involves a responsibility to sustainable mining that prioritizes the development of the communities where we operate .”
Since 2020, Cadia has signed a 15-year renewable energy purchase agreement, covering 55% of its needs with wind energy. In addition, in the last year and a half, Cadia has invested nearly 6 million Australian dollars in community and educational projects, boosting local development.
According to Michèle Brülhart, CEO of The Copper Mark , this recognition allows Newmont customers to access copper from an independently assessed supply chain, meeting the highest environmental, social and governance standards.
