The Winterfell development, located in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, has begun producing from a new oil field, according to Kosmos Energy, one of the partners in the offshore oil project.

The new oil field and its crude oil potential

The Winterfell oil field, discovered in 2021, is located in the Green Canyon area, at a depth of approximately 1600 meters. In addition, it has been developed through a 13-mile subsea connection to the host platform.

Beacon Offshore Energy is the operator of the oil extraction project. On the other hand, Kosmos Energy, and other partners involved are Westlawn Americas Offshore, Red Willow, Alta Mar Energy and CSL Exploration, participate in the oil potential of the field.

The Winterfell project will be developed in several phases, with the first two production wells of the initial phase already in operation and ramping up production, Kosmos Energy said. A third well is currently being drilled and is expected to come on stream by the end of the third quarter of 2024. The company expects the initial three wells to produce about 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).

The first phase of development

The first phase, which will include five wells, is expected to generate approximately 100 million barrels of oil equivalent, with additional growth potential in subsequent phases. Kosmos President and CEO Andrew G. Inglis highlighted Winterfell’s favorable features, including high-margin barrels, low carbon intensity and a quick return on investment. On the other hand, Inglis also expressed Kosmos’ enthusiasm for continuing to develop the Greater Winterfell area.

Crude oil production in the federal offshore Gulf of Mexico reached 1.831 million barrels per day (bpd) in April 2024, according to recent data from the EIA. In 2022, oil and oil and natural gas production in this area accounted for about 15% of total U.S. crude oil production and approximately 2% of total U.S. dry natural gas production.
