Iraq announced that its new Karbala refinery will begin commercial operations in March. According to authorities, the refinery, which has a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day (b/d), should be running at full capacity in August.
They also indicated that the preliminary products include gasoline, kerosene and diesel, and that, to date, the first unit is for 70,000 b/d from the refinery. They stressed that Karbala is Iraq’s first new refinery in decades.
Importantly, it was due to start operating in 2018, but the project suffered delays due to pressure on Iraqi finances, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when oil prices fell.
The authorities commented that the refinery will have the capacity to produce between 8 and 9 million liters a day (50,000-57,000 b/d) of 95 octane gasoline. It is expected to increase to 12 million liters a day (75,000 b/d) in the future.
It was also revealed, according to the World Energy Trade web portal, that Karbala will cover 75% of Iraq’s national consumption of petroleum products. Regarding the construction of pipelines, “The rest will be covered locally once other new refineries are developed,” said the Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdulghani.
