Neuralink announces that it has received FDA approval for the“Blindsight” brain device. This technology plans to restore sight to people who have lost their vision, including those who were born blind.

Blindsight device gets FDA approval

This chip is designed to restore sight in people with total blindness, including those who have lost their eyes or optic nerve. As Musk explained, everything will depend onaslong as the visual cortex of the brain is intact“. This device will have the ability to send visual signals directly to the brain, encoding the message and transforming it into actionable images.

Although the initial resolution will be low, comparable to the graphics of early Atari video games, Musk says the technology has the potential to evolve to exceed the quality of people’s natural vision.

In the future, this technology will make it possible to see wavelengths outside the human visible spectrum, such as infrared or ultraviolet, opening up new possibilities for those using the device. The company’s CEO has compared this capability to the abilities of the character Geordi La Forge, from“Star Trek,” known for his high-tech visor that “allows him to see beyond normal human vision.”

Neuralink has been working on a number of medical innovations, focused on the development of brain chips capable of restoring motor, hearing and visual functions in severely disabled people. The first successful implant in a quadriplegic patient allowed him to move a cursor on a screen with his mind, and another patient with a spinal cord injury regained some mobility after a subsequent intervention.

The Blindsight chip represents one of the company’s most important bets, with the goal of changing the lives of people with blindness. Neuralink continues to work on additional tests and hopes to expand the use of the device to treat a wide range of neurological and related disabilities.

On the other hand, Elon Musk has expressed that restored vision, through Blindsight, has the potential to become a powerful tool to restore sight, and improve it to levels never before imagined.
