Neste and Liiga , the name of Finland’s national ice hockey league, have announced a collaboration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from hockey teams. During the 2024-2025 season, most Liiga teams will start using Neste MY Renewable Diesel in their buses, replacing fossil diesel with a more sustainable alternative.

This change will result in a decrease in Liiga’s annual carbon emissions, which are estimated at around 6,400 tonnes of CO2e. This is comparable to the annual carbon footprint of approximately 500 to 600 Finnish citizens.
Transportation for national hockey teams accounts for 8% of the league’s total emissions, making it the fourth-largest source of emissions, behind spectator travel ( 64% ), stadium electricity consumption ( 17% ) and stadium heating ( 11% ).
Neste Vice President Marketing and Services Joni Pihlström expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration: “Liiga is showing an inspiring example of how sports can embrace sustainable solutions. Our renewable diesel offers an immediate way to reduce transport emissions, and is an important step in our mission to help reduce 20 million tonnes of annual emissions by 2030. ”.
The Neste MY Renewable Diesel initiative enables up to 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the life cycle of the fuel and is available at almost 190 stations across Finland, making it easier for teams to refuel their buses. In addition, Neste will provide accurate monitoring of consumption and emissions reductions through a detailed reporting system.

For his part, Vili Nurmi, Liiga ‘s sales director, highlighted the importance of sustainability in sport: “Sport plays a fundamental role in society, and we want to be a visible example of sustainability. This collaboration with Neste is a concrete step towards that goal, and the detailed reports we will receive will be vital to continue improving. ”.
