• In 2021, Colombia increased the level of natural gas reserves by 11% compared to 2020
• The departments of Casanare, Córdoba and La Guajira are the areas with the highest natural gas production in the country.
The Colombian Natural Gas Association (Naturgas) delivered a positive balance of indicators on the most important achievements of the national gas industry; Among them, it reports that in the period January – October 2022, gas production grew by 5.7% compared to the same period in 2021.
Among the sections of this report, the industry also analyzes the importance of natural gas in the global energy matrix, its production, demand and mass use, data that confirms the importance of energy as the most consistent part of the energy transition, the reduction of poverty and closing inequality gaps.
According to the president of Naturgas, Luz Stella Murgas, “2022 represents a year of growth for the natural gas industry in Colombia, this is supported by the increase in potential reserves in the continental area of 30 TPC (cubic terapies), as as reported by Promigas; and offshore, Colombia has potential reserves of 70 to 100 TPC, recently reported by Ecopetrol. These reserves ratify the energy sovereignty that our country has in natural gas”.
The report also highlights that the transportation gas pipeline network grew 304km in the last five years, 4% more kilometers of this infrastructure that today allows us to meet the needs of the market in a reliable and safe manner in the national territory. In terms of coverage, Naturgas revealed that there are 10,759,513 users connected to natural gas, distributed in the industrial, commercial and residential sectors, but there are still multiple opportunities to improve access to this service in the most vulnerable homes.
“The goal of our industry is to increase the average annual coverage of the natural gas service for stratum 1 and 2 families by 30% and reach an annual average of 303,200 new users. To achieve this goal, joint work between the public and private sectors is required to continue closing the inequality gaps, as well as reduce the monetary and energy poverty rates that persist in the country. This will be possible to prioritize thanks to the integration of the industry in the construction of the National Development Plan”, added Murgas.
On the other hand, the industry shared some of the objectives of the industry for 2023: among them, are expanding the access of more Colombians to natural gas, strengthening Colombia’s progress towards sustainable mobility with the help of Vehicular Natural Gas in cargo and public transport nationwide, as well as boosting the production of urea, a key input in the manufacture of fertilizers to protect food security.
