Natron Energy, a global leader in sodium-ion battery technology, has unveiled plans to establish a sodium-ion gigafactory in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. With an investment amounting to $1.4 billion, this plant, located at the Kingsboro megasite, aims to produce 24 GW of advanced batteries annually.

More jobs and clean energy

The plant, which will encompass about 1.2 million square feet, represents a significant leap in the production of sodium-ion battery production in the United States. This breakthrough will strengthen the local economy, creating more than 1,000 high-quality jobs, and drive the adoption of safe and environmentally friendly energy storage technologies. Natron’s batteries stand out for their higher power density, extended life and a manufacturing process that dispenses with critical minerals such as lithium and cobalt.

The announcement was made by Governor Roy Cooper, accompanied by senior Natron executives and other key officials. According to Colin Wessells, Natron’s founder and co-chief executive officer, this facility will enable a 40-fold increase in the company’s current production capacity, marking an achievement in its mission to offer safe and sustainable energy solutions. and sustainable energy solutions.

In addition to the direct impact on industry, the plant will benefit from a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), estimated at $21.7 million over 12 years, and additional support from the state to strengthen local infrastructure. This project will also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissionsemissions, aligning with the state’s clean energy goals.

Natron, with its Prussian Prussian blue electrode technologycontinues to position itself as a leader in the energy sector, offering viable alternatives to traditional batteries and supporting a more resilient and sustainable domestic supply chain.
