Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ) is having a busy period, with several large container ship deliveries and the launch of the first 7,800 TEU LNG-powered vessel for Seaspan and ZIM.
One of the most recent deliveries is the Megamax vessel “MSC Michel Cappellini” of 24,346 TEUs, 399.90 m in length and 61.30 m (24 rows) in beam, equipped with scrubber and conventional propulsion, according to Alphaliner.
The ship is owned by the investment arm of China’s Bank of Communication (BoCom), which leases the vessel from MSC under a long-term contract and is the third of six twins YZJ will deliver before the end of the year.
It should be noted that the main engine of the Megamax is a WinGD – 11 X92 that provides the ship with a service speed of up to 22.5 knots. Power for the temperature-controlled loads is supplied through 2,026 refrigerated plugs.
MSC Michel Cappellini will begin operating on the Far East-Europe service
The “MSC Michel Cappellini” completed its construction at the Jiangsu-Mitsui Taicang shipyard, and from there the ship sailed to Zhoushan, where it spent two weeks at the Jinhaiwan shipyard outfitting dock, to wait for its turn to set sail and receive some final touches.
MSC Michel Cappellini will begin operations on the MSC-operated Far East-Europe ‘Lion’ service, which is part of the 2M configuration with Maersk (‘AE6’). This service rotates in eleven weeks, but is about to be expanded to 13, with two more ships in its fleet.
The additional tonnage will further optimize the itinerary for slow sailing and will also serve a new (second) call in Antwerp. In addition, the measure “helps” the market to absorb tonnage that would otherwise have difficulty finding employment.
Currently, the ‘Lion/AE6’ has a megamax fleet consisting of three first-generation MGX-23s and eight second-generation MGX-24s.
