Muanda International Oil Company (MIOC), Perenco’s offshore subsidiary in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has made an oil discovery during its drilling campaign offshore the African country. This discovery represents the first offshore exploration success in nearly thirty years in the region.

MIOC activates oil exploration in DRC

MIOC drilled two exploration wells in 2024, reaching an oil discovery in the Moke-East well, located between the Lukami and Motoba fields in the onshore DRC basin. Drilling activities were carried out with Dixstone’s proprietary Nuada class 82 SD-C self-elevating rig. This well, to be completed in the next few weeks, encountered a net oil column of 24 feet and will undergo testing to assess its viability.

In addition, Frédéric Kiepferle, Perenco’s General Manager in the DRC, noted that the offshore subsidiary, MIOC, has had a very active start to the year, including the drilling of the first exploration wells in almost three decades. exploration wells in almost three decades. Kiepferle highlighted the encouraging initial results from the Moke-East well and mentioned that, after many months of preparatory work, the Nuada has moved to the GCO field, where it will operate for the next twelve months.

The company has also noted that the drilling of the first of twelve wells in the GCO field is part of MIOC’s ongoing offshore development drilling campaign in the DRC. This effort is aimed at unlocking more hydrocarbon hydrocarbon resources in the country and is expected to be completed in parallel with the CS02 workover unit at the same location. However, the second exploration well, LUKS-A, intended to explore a southern extension of the Pinda formation, was plugged and abandoned due to insufficient hydrocarbon potential.

New Perenco projects

This company is the only international oil and gas producer in the DRC. Kiepferle expressed his satisfaction with the company’s commitment to the exploration of new resources and mentioned that the DRC’s oil and gas industry has a promising future. New projects could valorize the LPG extracted from the gas for the local market or provide more gas for electricity generation in Muanda.

Finally, this oil discovery comes shortly after Perenco’s Perenco acquired Eni’s stakes in several oil permits in the Congo, thanks to a deal valued at approximately US$300 million. In addition, the company has decided to undertake drilling activities on an appraisal well near the Hylia South West discovery made in December 2022 offshore Gabon. It is also working on a five-well development drilling campaign in a field offshore Cameroon and has unveiled a redevelopment plan for two oil assets in the Campos basin, offshore Brazil.
