Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said this week that he will travel to Bolivia because the government is seeking Latin American coordination for the use of lithium in the generation of batteries and energy storage systems, as well as electric cars.

“If Latin America coordinates, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Mexico would have more than 65% of the world’s lithium, that is, it is one of the strategic minerals for the future,” he said in media statements.

At the beginning of May, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador commented in his daily conference that Chile and Argentina had already shown interest in this union, and that the association was being sought to “unite experiences” in relation to the so-called “white gold”.

Mexico nationalized lithium last April with changes to the Mining Law, which states that it is “of public utility” and abolishes new concessions, licenses, contracts and permits in this area.

In addition, the changes stipulate that areas with lithium deposits will be considered mining reserve zones, and that the exploitation and use of lithium will be exclusive to the Mexican State, through a state-owned company.

In this regard, the Mexican Foreign Minister announced that he will meet this Thursday with Bolivian President Luis Arce to advance in the exchange of experiences regarding lithium. “What we want to do is to coordinate our actions on lithium, as was once done with oil,” he detailed.

He also commented that Bolivia is one of the countries that has one of the largest reserves in the world, “and it is a dialogue that matters to us and interests us”, as he added that Bolivia already manufactures electric vehicles.
