Mercedes-Benz continues to set the standard in the automotive sector with an innovative solution that could change the way we think about electric mobility. The German firm is developing a highly efficient solar paint , designed to be applied directly to the bodywork of its electric vehicles , which would allow energy to be generated continuously, even when the car is not moving.
A solar paint that increases the vehicle’s autonomy
The new photovoltaic system developed by Mercedes-Benz uses solar cells that are 5 micrometers thick, noticeably thinner than a human hair, but with an energy efficiency of 20%. This advance could transform the way in which electric vehicle drivers recharge their batteries, generating enough energy to travel more than 12,000 kilometers a year , depending on factors such as geographic location, sun intensity and level of shade.
In addition, the energy generated by the solar cells is efficiently used to directly power the vehicle’s battery , which reduces the need to charge the car and also improves overall energy efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz moves towards sustainability with accessible materials
Unlike traditional solar modules, which use materials such as silicon or rare earths, Mercedes-Benz solar paint is made from non-toxic and easily recyclable materials . This approach reduces the cost of producing solar cells and makes them more accessible for mass implementation in electric vehicles in the future.
This technology has the potential to change the landscape of electric vehicle autonomy. In sunny cities like Los Angeles, drivers could even generate enough surplus energy to power their homes, using a bi-directional charging system.
On the other hand, in areas with less solar radiation, the energy efficiency of solar paint remains an interesting solution to extend the autonomy of vehicles without having to resort to long stops to recharge.
