Emerging from its initial development phase, Israel-based Mentee Robotics has unveiled its first prototype of a humanoid AI robot that walks on two legs. The company was established in 2022 by a team led by Professor Amnon Shashua, who now chairs the company and is a renowned expert in artificial intelligence , computer vision and natural language processing.
In announcing the launch of the prototype, Professor Shashua expressed his excitement: ” We are on the cusp of a convergence of computer vision, natural language understanding, powerful and detailed simulators and methodologies to transfer from simulation to the real world ” . He also highlighted the company’s vision of integrating these technologies to create a bipedal robot that can operate efficiently in both domestic and industrial environments.
The robot, nicknamed Menteebot, stands out for its ability to understand commands in natural language and perform complex tasks using artificial intelligence. Its development has been based on recent advances in large language models, and its movement is facilitated by an innovative machine learning method called Sim2Real. This method allows the robot to learn in a virtual environment and apply this knowledge in the real world efficiently, using data optimally.

Additionally, Menteebot employs NeRF (neural representations of feature fields)-based technologies to map its environment in three dimensions. This mapping allows the robot to locate objects and navigate through complex spaces, avoiding obstacles and planning routes autonomously .
Despite the capabilities demonstrated by the prototype in completing tasks such as navigation, locomotion and object manipulation, Mentee Robotics points out that there is still work to do before the robot is completely ready for commercialization.
Importantly, the company aims to launch a production model by the first quarter of 2025 , which will benefit from vision-based cameras for detection and patented electric motors that meet high standards of dexterity.
As Mentee Robotics continues to refine its technology, the potential impact of these AI-enabled humanoid robots extends beyond the home and warehouse, anticipating applications in areas such as senior care and education. These machines could be adapted to offer personalized assistance and support in daily tasks, potentially improving quality of life and offering new forms of human-robot interaction in critical sectors.
