The MAN 7L21/31DF-M generator set from MAN Energy Solutions has successfully passed the type approval test in China, marking a step forward in the development of dual-fuel methanol engines . This certification was carried out in collaboration with CSSC Marine Power (CMP) and validated by the leading marine classification societies.
Methanol engines for the maritime industry
The MAN 7L21/31DF-M is designed to operate on methanol , a fuel with a lower carbon footprint, in line with global emissions reduction initiatives. Based on the MAN 21/31 Mk II platform, this engine optimises fuel consumption and offers flexibility in operation, as it can also use heavy fuel oil and biofuels.
The new methanol injection concept from MAN Energy Solutions enables greater energy efficiency and reduces pollutant emissions. The adaptation of the injection system took approximately two years, including 18 months of intensive testing at the company’s facilities.
The future of alternative fuels
Since its launch in 2024, the MAN 7L21/31DF-M has recorded double-digit sales figures, demonstrating the growing demand for flexible propulsion solutions in the shipping industry. Its compatibility with the MAN B&W ME-LGIM two-stroke engine positions it as a strategic option for the sector’s energy transition.
With this certification, MAN Energy Solutions reaffirms its commitment to innovation and the development of technologies that facilitate the adoption of more sustainable fuels in the maritime industry.
