Maersk, the world’s leading container shipping company, has announced the acquisition of six medium-sized container ships that will be equipped with dual-fuel engines, enabling them to run on green methanol. The order has been placed with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and the ships, each with a capacity of 9,000 containers (equivalent to twenty-foot units), are expected to be delivered between 2026 and 2027.
Such a decision represents another important milestone in the company’s ongoing commitment to the environmental transformation of its fleet and its ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
Rabab Boulos, Maersk’s Director of Infrastructure, highlighted the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating: “With this order, we take another step in the green transformation of our fleet and towards our goal of becoming net zero by 2040. . As with all of our other ship orders over the past two years, these ships will be able to run on green methanol.”
Pioneers in the acquisition of this type of container ships
In 2021, Maersk made headlines by placing an order for the world’s first containership designed to run on methanol, reaffirming its commitment to only procure newbuild units capable of using green fuels.
Boulos also emphasized the flexibility and versatility of the new container ships, stating: “We have selected a design and size that make them very adaptable in terms of deployment. This will allow them to fulfill various roles both in our current network and in the future, providing the flexibility that our customers demand. As they are gradually integrated, they will replace existing capacity in our fleet.”
The first methanol-enabled vessel, a 2,100 TEU feeder, is expected to be delivered to the company later this summer. Meanwhile, the newly ordered vessels will further contribute to the reduction of Maersk’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.
By operating with green methanol, these six vessels will be able to reduce approximately 450,000 tons of CO 2 e emissions per year, according to fuel life cycle analysis. These vessels will replace existing capacity in the Maersk fleet, ensuring a greener and more sustainable shipping operation.
Construction of the six vessels will be carried out by the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group in China, a trusted partner in Maersk’s pursuit of environmentally responsible shipping practices. As the ships are delivered and integrated into Maersk’s operations, the company will continue to cement its position as a pioneering leader in sustainable shipping, leading the way towards a greener future for the industry.
