Maersk reported that after fifteen months, work began for the construction of the first of the new 16,200 TEU container ships, which according to Maersk will mark the beginning of a new era in maritime transport.
The vessels are being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), which previously valued the order at $1.4 billion. The delivery of the vessels is scheduled between the first and fourth quarter of 2024. The details of the constructions have not yet been revealed, apart from the fact that they will have a length of 349.9 meters with a beam of 53.34 meters.
In addition to being the first large containerships designed to run on methanol, they will also incorporate a variety of features to improve operating efficiency and environmental performance, according to a Maritime Executive report.
Maersk revealed in a video and social media post that the first ceremonial steel cutting for the new 16,200 TEU vessel took place in South Korea late last year. The shipping company indicated that “a good start is halfway.”
“This marks the turning point where the project goes from design to reality and we look forward to continuing the good cooperation with Hyundai Heavy Industries,” Kristian Agdrup, Maersk Principal Naval Architect, said during the steel cutting ceremony at the HHI shipyard. . “Production will progress rapidly from this point and the next key stage, factory approval testing of the main engine, is expected in the spring.[septentrional] of 2023”.
