Lomar Labs and Newlight announce a collaboration to launch innovative strategies such as upgrades to hydrogen-diesel hybrid engines. This partnership seeks to offer an affordable solution and improve energy efficiency in existing vessels.

Hydrogen-diesel hybrid engine technology

The main objective of the collaboration is the modernization of diesel engines using a hydrogen-diesel blend. This approach seeks to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%, with some trials demonstrating savings of up to 30%. This way, the maritime sector will be able to meet the International Maritime Organization ‘s ( IMO ) decarbonization goals without having to completely replace its propulsion systems.

Decarbonization isn’t about waiting for the perfect fuel; it’s about acting now with all the viable tools at our disposal.

Stylianos Papageorgiou, CEO of Lomar Labs.

Furthermore, this collaboration will deploy a pilot project aboard a Lomar vessel in the summer of 2025, where tests will be conducted both in port and at sea to collect data and evaluate the performance of this hybrid technology under real-world conditions.

We believe the industry can’t afford to wait. By taking immediate action with the current fleet, we can decarbonize every ship, making a real impact today.

Haran Cohen Hillel, CEO of Newlight.

The collaboration between Lomar Labs and Newlight is helping to reduce the environmental impact of existing vessels, and is also paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for the maritime industry.

As the maritime sector becomes more adaptable to stricter emissions regulations, the adoption of innovative solutions is increasingly important to ensure shipowners can continue operating efficiently and profitably while meeting sustainability standards.
