Brazil and Colombia would lead the development of new energies in Latin America, driven by green hydrogen projects. According to Wood Mackenzie, the value of offshore wind capacity will be in supporting green hydrogen projects, which will increase in importance in domestic energy use and exports in the future.
According to Wood Mackenzie, a strong increase in offshore wind projects will be seen in Latin America. This trend will achieve an installed capacity of 34 gigawatts (GW) in 2050.
He also specified that offshore wind activity will correspond to a compound annual growth rate of 15.4% from 2032. “For that year it is expected that the first projects will come into operation in the region. At the head will be Brazil and Colombia”, highlighted Wood Mackenzie.
He added that Brazil and Colombia are already providing official roadmaps and guidelines for future activity. “We have seen an important regulatory movement in support of offshore wind developments in those countries”, commented the Research, Energy and Renewables area of Wood Mackenzie.
In addition, he indicated that the two countries have a growing number of planned projects. For this reason, the growth of the pipeline announced this year in Latin America already represents a 34% share of the announcements of new global projects, as of the third quarter of 2022.
