Romanian oil company OMV Petrom, the leading integrated energy producer in southeastern Europe, has announced the commissioning of its new crude oil storage tank at the Petrobrazi refinery, which is the largest in Romania. Built to the highest safety standards, the tank is equipped with double walls and base, an aluminum dome and an internal floating lid that minimizes vapor emissions.
The development of this project took about two years, with an investment amounting to more than 23 million euros.

According to Radu Caprau, member of OMV Petrom’s Executive Board and head of Refining and Marketing, this tank is part of a series of significant projects recently completed at the Petrobrazi refinery. “Together with the addition of new coke drums and other improvements, these investments strengthen our ability to operate the refinery safely and maintain sufficient fuel reserves to supply both Romania and the adjacent region. In addition, this project contributes significantly to the reduction of our steam emissions to practically zero.“commented Caprau.
Romania’s largest crude oil storage tank
This imposing tank, which exceeds the height of a 10-story building, has a total capacity of 60,000 m³, enough to store crude oil for store crude oil that could be processed in approximately 1.2 million fuel fills. Particularly noteworthy is the aluminum dome, the largest structure of its kind in Romania, which weighs 53 tons, is 15 meters high and 72 meters in diameter.
A remarkable fact is that the dome was installed using a pneumatic system with 28 lifting devices, a technique used for the first time in the country.
It is important to mention that since 2005, OMV Petrom has invested more than 2 billion euros in the modernization of the Petrobrazi refinery, allocating one third of this sum to reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
