November 17, 2024 marked a new chapter for the Kipushi mine , located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In an official ceremony led by President Félix Tshisekedi and his distinguished delegation, Ivanhoe Mines reopened this iconic mining operation , a key project for the country’s economic development.

Kipushi Mine promotes sustainability and development in Africa

Kipushi, known for its high-quality zinc, is now the largest project of its kind in Africa . The collaboration between Ivanhoe, Gécamines and the Congolese government has allowed production to be restarted and sustainability standards to be established. Marna Cloete, President of Ivanhoe, highlighted that 97% of the staff are local, underlining the commitment to community empowerment.

With an estimated production capacity of over 278,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate over the next five years , Kipushi is positioned as a key driver of development in the region. President Tshisekedi described the project as “ a renaissance for the Kipushi community ” after decades of inactivity since the 1990s.

Ivanhoe is also celebrating its inclusion in the Mining Journal ESG Index , positioning itself as a leader in emissions reduction and environmental responsibility. This achievement supports the company’s vision: to develop resources while respecting the environment and communities.

The reopening of Kipushi not only represents progress in African mining, but is also an example of successful collaboration between the private sector and government to create shared value.
