According to the Russian media TASS, Russia has launched a new drone dubbed “Joker”, which has the ability to go into hibernation for extended periods before being “activated” or used. Its design allows it to hide from electronic countermeasures and thus be able to prepare to carry out its mission hours, days or weeks before its operator activates it.

Ultimatum: the advanced model of the Joker series

The Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions (CCBR) of Roscosmos, the Russian state corporation, revealed the Joker series of drones in May and in June they presented the advanced Ultimatum model, capable of operating in various weather conditions. They recently announced a hibernation system that allows these drones to wait for long periods undetected, then perform surprise attacks in a matter of seconds.

Dmitry Kuzyakin, general director of the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions, explained to TASS: “A tool for hibernating FPV drones of the Joker line and its top model Ultimatum was developed and implemented at the Central Design Bureau. A drone with a hibernator can take up a position for an attack and hibernate for several weeks. In the air, a “sleeping” drone does not manifest itself in any way.”

According to Kuzyakin, the drone cannot be detected by other electronic systems while it is in a hibernation state. After flying to a position close to the target, the drone lands and hides. “As a rule, dominant heights, roofs of buildings or other tall structures are selected. When the time comes, you don’t need to go over the distance for the target. The drone is already in place and all it needs to do is power up and attack.”

This system allows to minimize the preparation time of the device for an attack. “Flight time is saved. A few seconds pass between turning on the drone and attacking, leaving no chance to launch countermeasure systems. An FPV pilot can place and then “wake up” and sequentially apply up to 15 hibernating drones,” said the CEO of CCBR.

The Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions (CCBR) has developed the Joker line based on highly versatile sports drones to carry out various combat missions. These can perform reconnaissance tasks, deploy munitions and act as kamikazes thanks to their multifunctional payload platform that allows them to use different types of equipment.

The top model Ultimatum is particularly resistant and can operate in extreme weather conditions. According to Kuzyakin, director of the CCBR, it is capable of operating in climates where even birds are afraid to fly. They have proven their efficiency in temperatures down to -29 degrees Celsius .
