Nokia and NASA will install internet on the Moon (specifically 4G technology), with the aim of facilitating the establishment of humanity in space. The company has been selected by NASA to implement the first cellular network on the Earth’s satellite . “This effort marks the beginning of a new era in space telecommunications, by implementing LTE/4G technology on the lunar surface,” explained a Nokia spokesperson. This project not only seeks to improve communication during lunar missions, but also to prepare the ground for future human colonies in space.

LTE technology on the Moon: Is it possible?

NASA’s Tipping Point program, which promotes collaboration with companies to advance commercial space technology , supports this initiative. The US space agency hopes that this innovation will be key to its Artemis program, which aims to establish sustainable operations on the Moon by the end of this decade, as a prelude to the exploration of Mars.

According to Thierry E. Klein, president of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia , the system consists of an LTE base station incorporating evolved packet core (EPC) functionalities, an LTE user equipment, RF antennas and highly reliable software for control of operations and maintenance. “The infrastructure will be installed on the lunar lander, while the user devices will be adapted to operate on vehicles and other units deployed on the surface,” he added.

Telecommunications network design

The network’s compact design allows for the integration of a complete LTE infrastructure, tailored to the severe size, weight and power constraints of space payloads. Klein underlines the importance of this project: “To maintain a lasting human presence on the Moon and Mars, connectivity and communications are vital.”

It is important to mention that this project anticipates a significant advance in space communications infrastructure and could also serve as a testing ground for future technological applications that benefit daily life on Earth. Innovations developed to operate in the extreme conditions of space could translate into technological improvements for challenging environments on our planet.
