(also known as J-Power) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. signed an agreement to equip the fuel carrier KUROTAKISAN MARU III with the innovative Wind Challenger wind propulsion system. This vessel was completed in December 2021 and will have this system from the second half of 2025.
First adaptation of the Wind Challenger on a ship
Importantly, this will be the first time in the world that the Wind Challenger will be installed on an existing vessel. This system, which employs a retractable and extendable rigid sail to harness wind energy, transforming it into propulsive power, promises to improve the ship’s energy efficiency significantly.
It is estimated that this technology will reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions between 5% and 8%.
Energy efficiency at sea
This is not the first time that J-Power has equipped a transport vessel In addition, the company has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to improving fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the installation of advanced systems on its vessels.
This project aligns with the company’s mission to achieve carbon neutrality, as outlined in its “J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050” announced in February 2021.
The implementation of the Wind Challenger system on the KUROTAKISAN MARU III could inspire other shipping companies to consider adopting similar technologies. This would accelerate the transition to a greener industry and set new standards for efficiency and sustainability in shipping.
