Italian cable manufacturer and installation service provider Prysmian has completed the installation of export cables for the 30 MW Eolmed floating wind farm located offshore France. In 2021, this company had secured this project through a contract signed with the French TSO Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE). This agreement included the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of a submarine export power cable system.
Prysmian completes crucial stage at Eolmed
This company was responsible for various stages of the project, from design to commissioning of a three-core 66 kV static EPR-insulated submarine export cable, totaling 23 km. In addition, they installed a 66 kV dynamic subsea export queue, also with EPR insulation, connecting the onshore grid to the wind farm’s power center. This highly engineered project is EPCI’s second dynamic cable system project for Prysmian, consolidating its leadership in the floating offshore wind farm market.
“With this project, which follows the offshore wind farm f l otaling At the Provence Grand Large (PGL) offshore wind farm, Prysmian once again demonstrates its market leadership and the effectiveness of its expertise and technologies in the development of submarine cables and systems to support smarter, greener power grids around the world.“said Alberto Boffelli, Prysmian’s director of transmission operations.
Bourbon Services recently installed a floating electric hub (FEH) at the Eolmed floating offshore wind farm, marking the completion of the first stage of the 30 MW project.
First floating wind farm in the Mediterranean Sea
The wind farm will have three wind turbines of 10 MW each, supplied by Vestas, which will have the capacity to produce more than 110 million kWh/year in 2025, enough to supply the electricity consumption of 50,000 people.
Led by renewable energy company Qair, together with its partners TotalEnergies and BW Ideol, the Eolmed project stands out as one of the first floating wind farms in the Mediterranean.
In addition, this project represents a breakthrough in floating offshore wind energy and paves the way for similar future developments in other regions of the world, enhancing the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energies.
