A subsidiary of the Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), known as ONGC Videsh, announced the discovery of oil in the Urraca-IX well (block CPO-5) it recently drilled in the Llanos Basin, Colombia.
In 2008, the CPO-5 block was awarded to this company in the bidding round launched by Colombia. ONGC Videsh holds a 70% interest and the remaining 30% is owned by Geopark.
“The discovery of oil in the lower lookout of this well opens up new areas for further exploration in the northern part of the block,” India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (Mopng) said.
It is important to note that the company has a significant presence in Colombia, through three exploratory blocks and a joint venture with oil producer Mansarovar Energy Colombia (MECL).
ONGC’s subsidiary had previously discovered commercial crude in the Mariposa and Indico fields in the block in 2017 and 2018, where they currently produce around 20,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).
The Indian Ministry told media outlets such as Business Line that “the discovery of oil in the block with the Urraca-1X well reiterates ONGC Videsh’s technical and operational prowess and adds one more feather to its cap towards the extensive Exploration and Drilling campaign in Colombia”.
