In the Russian city of Dzerzhinsk, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, five schools have implemented an experimental learning plan with virtual reality glasses, where students learn by competing in teams, in a format similar to video games that simulates various dangerous situations, such as fires, earthquakes or accidents. At the moment the device is mainly used for the subject of Fundamentals of Safety in Daily Life.
“Let’s look at the survival scenario in the forest, for example. The boys train actions such as lighting a fire and what to do if they fall into a river. They learn what actions are essential to save themselves and get to where there are people,” explained Borís Kotélnikov, director from one of the institutions. And he added: “If a child sees himself in a similar situation, he will know how to act.”
The company that created smart glasses ‘Immersívnaya Shkola. VRShkola’, indicated that the device also has simulators applicable to other disciplines such as physics and chemistry. One of these simulators consists of choosing a type of aircraft based on the atmospheric and meteorological conditions on a strange planet. Or select available materials on an asteroid to make a cell phone.
The authorities of the city of Nizhny Novgorod are taking steps to extend this type of learning to all its schools.
