In collaboration with companies Space Solar, Reykjavik Energy and Transition Labs, Iceland plans to launch an ambitious project to harvest solar energy directly from space . This innovative system promises to shake up the renewable energy industry, providing clean and continuous electricity 24 hours a day , regardless of weather conditions.
Solar energy directly from space
The project aims to use satellites orbiting the Earth to capture solar energy in an environment unconstrained by the atmosphere or diurnal variations. These satellites will be equipped with solar panels capable of capturing sunlight continuously, sending the energy to receiving stations on Earth via high-frequency radio waves.
The collected electricity will be converted and sent directly to the power grid , allowing Iceland to benefit from a constant source of renewable energy.
The first solar power plant in space in 2030
By 2030, the project is targeting an initial capacity of 30 MW, enough to power between 1,500 and 3,000 homes in Iceland. As the technology matures, future installations are expected to be able to generate gigawatts of power, making Iceland the first country in the world to receive large-scale space solar power.
Transition Labs, an organization that implements climate solutions at scale, has played a crucial role in the development of the project, supporting strategic planning and the development of the necessary infrastructure.
