In an unprecedented breakthrough for climate science and geospatial intelligence, IBM and the open source Artificial Intelligence platform Hugging Face have announced the open availability of IBM’s geospatial foundation model, built from satellite data from the POT. This model becomes the largest of its kind in Hugging Face and is the first open source AI model developed in collaboration with NASA .

Access to the latest data has been a significant challenge in climate science, where environmental conditions change on an almost daily basis. Despite the growing amount of data, scientists and researchers still face obstacles in analyzing these large data sets.

This new geospatial foundation model seeks to overcome these obstacles and democratize the access and application of AI to drive new innovations in Earth and climate science.

“The essential role of open source technologies in accelerating critical areas of discovery like climate change has never been clearer,” said Sriram Raghavan, Vice President of IBM Research AI. “By combining the efforts of the IBM founding model aimed at creating flexible and reusable AI systems with NASA’s Earth satellite data repository and making it available on the leading open source AI platform Hugging Face, we can harness the power collaboration to implement faster, higher-impact solutions that will improve our planet.”

IBM and NASA: a great collaboration

This model, jointly trained by IBM and NASA on Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) satellite data over one year over the entire continental United States, has demonstrated a 15% improvement over state-of-the-art techniques to date. using half of the labeled data.

With additional fine tuning, the base model can be reused for tasks such as tracking deforestation, predicting crop yields, or detecting and monitoring greenhouse gases.

This announcement is an important step in the collaboration between IBM and NASA to build an AI model that could speed analysis of satellite images and increase scientific discovery. It is also part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s decade-long Open Source Science Initiative to build a more accessible, inclusive, and collaborative scientific community.

This milestone in climate science and geospatial intelligence promises to change the way we analyze and understand our planet, and is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in the age of AI.
