Iberdrola Spain, in collaboration with the Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar, is promoting an innovative decarbonisation plan to reduce the carbon footprint of the funeral sector in Extremadura . This effort is part of a broader commitment by the National Association of Funeral Services (PANASEF), which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the sector by 2040 .
A personalized plan for Extremadura funeral homes
In this joint initiative, a customized plan is being designed for the four main funeral facilities of the Grupo Iniciativas Alcaesar in Extremadura, located in Cáceres, Navalmoral de la Mata, Plasencia and Mérida. The main objective is to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency , which will result in a significant decrease in CO2 emissions and significant savings for funeral homes in the short and medium term.
The decarbonisation plan includes two main paths: on the one hand, energy efficiency and electrification measures will be implemented to reduce energy consumption; on the other, renewable energy production will be boosted by installing solar panels in funeral homes. Thanks to these measures, energy consumption is expected to be reduced by 25% in the short term and by 50% in the medium term, which will also help reduce carbon emissions .
One of the most innovative aspects of the project is the use of solar communities . The Extremadura funeral homes are installing more than 600 photovoltaic panels on their roofs, which will produce 407 MWh of 100% sustainable energy annually. This energy will be used both for self-consumption by the funeral homes and for nearby residents , within a radius of two kilometers, under the modality of community self-consumption . This local energy model will benefit nearly 400 families , who will be able to enjoy clean energy at a more affordable price.
Benefits of the collaboration between Iberdrola and the Alcaesar Initiatives Group
The results of this initiative translate into energy and economic savings and a positive impact on the environment. For example, the San Pedro de Alcántara Funeral Home in Cáceres, with its 99 solar panels, will avoid the emission of 13 tons of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the carbon absorption of 528 trees. In turn, the Plasencia Funeral Home, with 261 solar panels, will reduce the emission of 33 tons of CO2 per year, contributing to the well-being of around 180 families.
This collaboration between the two organisations is an important step towards the decarbonisation of the funeral sector and the transition towards a more sustainable future. Thanks to these initiatives, not only will the carbon footprint of funeral homes be reduced, but the use of clean and renewable energy will also be promoted, contributing to the sustainability of nearby communities.
