Iberdrola has taken a decisive step towards building the largest wind farm in Portugal after receiving a production licence from the Portuguese Directorate General of Energy and Geology (DGEG). This follows an investment of around 350 million euros aimed at transforming renewable energy in the country.
Portugal’s largest wind farm will be a hybrid system
The project, which will be located in the districts of Vila Real and Braga, will combine wind and hydroelectric energy , creating an unprecedented hybrid system in Portugal. The infrastructure, which will consist of two wind farms – Tâmega Norte and Tâmega Sul – will have an installed capacity of 274 MW, enough to supply more than 128,000 homes per year.
The park will be integrated into the Tâmega Hydroelectric Complex system, one of Iberdrola’s largest projects in Europe, which will allow for optimising energy distribution by taking advantage of existing infrastructure. This project will contribute to the energy transition in Portugal and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions.
The impact of this project will be multiple. In addition to generating clean energy , it is expected to create around 700 jobs in the construction and assembly phases of the wind turbines , substations and transmission lines. Local companies such as CJR, Conduril-Socorpena, Painhas and Proef will be involved in the development of the project.
